It is communication through pictures or symbols. It's important because it's simpler and you can communicate with people that speak a different language.

Line, shape and form, space, texture, value, and color. They are used to send a message through the design. 
5.What is a vector-based design and how is it created?
It is a design made up of paths rather than dots. This means it can be blown up without appearing blurry. It can be created using the tools in illustrator. (pen tool/line tool)
6.How is color used effectively in a graphic design?
Color is used effectively by utilizing the color wheel and using the different color schemes.
7.What is a raster-based image and how is it created?
A raster-based image is an image made up of paths that can be increased in size without becoming blurry. It can be created in Adobe Illustrator.
8.How does the manipulation of size and resolution effect digital images?
It can effect the shape and clarity of an image.
9.What are the principles of design and how can they be used within a design?
Balance, contrast, emphasis, figure/ground, portion/scale, repetition, rhythm, unity/variety. They can be used to enhance a design.
10.What is the function of type within a design?
The function of type is to create a certain feeling/mood (depending on type of font).

They use the Z-pattern to bring in the viewer's eye to the the most important parts first.
12.What steps does a designer take to design a page layout from concept to final product?
A designer does a sketch first to get their ideas onto  paper, then they brainstorm and research, then finally they begin to work on their design.
13.What are the key developments in the history of visual communication? How do these developments shape our industry?
The key developments are those of computers, typing machines, and others and they helped to further our knowledge and expertise in the industry. They made it easier to do our job and gave us the ability to have more complex designs.
