Podcast #2 Color Theory

The right use of color can do what?
Maximize productivity, minimize visual fatigue, and relax the body.

Within the electromagnetic spectrum, which waves allow us to see color?
Visible light

Describe white light?
Equal parts of all colors in visible spectrum.

How do we see color if objects "have no color of their own"?
Objects appear to be in color when they absorb or reflect colors in the visible spectrum. Reflected color is the color we see.

What is a glass prism?
A transparent triangular object that breaks white light into all he colors.

What seven colors result when white light is refracted through a prism?
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

Describe hue?
The color itself.

When does white light occur?
When all the wavelengths are reflected back to your eye.

When does black light occur?
When no light is reflected back to your eye.

How color is perceived depends on what?
The type of light it is seen with.

What is a color wheel?
A visual tool that shows the relationship between primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.

What are primary colors? Name them?
The main colors on a color wheel. Red, yellow, and blue.

What are secondary colors? Name them?
When two primary colors are mixed together. Orange, green, and violet.

What are tertiary colors? Name them?
When primary colors and secondary colors are mixed together. Red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, and red-violet.

What are neutral colors? How can they be created?
Don’t show up on the color wheel and they’re colors of very low saturation. Created by mixing complementary colors.

How can a neutral color help a design?
They help to put the focus on other colors or serve to tone down overpowering colors.

What are complementary colors? Name them?
Colors that draw a lot of attention and work best in situations where you need high-contrast compositions. 2 colors opposite of each other on the color scheme. Red and green, orange and blue, yellow and violet.

What is color value?
The lightness or darkness of a hue.

What is a shade?
When you add black to a hue it creates a low-value color.

What is a tint?
When you add white to a hue it produces a high-value color.

What is saturation/intensity?
Brightness of a color.

What happens when you mix complementary colors together?
You produce a dull tone.

Describe color harmony?
A pleasing arrangement of parts. It’s pleasing to the eye and creates a sense of order.

What is a color scheme?
Used to create style and appeal. Based on the color wheel and the arrangement of colors. They remain harmonious regardless of the rotation angle.

Describe a monochromatic color scheme?
Uses variations of tints and shades. They go well together making a smoothing effect and is very easy on the eyes.

Describe an analogous color scheme?
Uses 3 colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel (one is used as a dominant color while others enrich the scheme). They are found in nature and are pleasing to the eye. They produce a bright and cheery effect and can accommodate changing in moods.

Describe a complementary color scheme?
Made of 2 colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel. They draw a lot of attention and work best in situations where you need high-contrast compositions.

Describe a split-complementary color scheme?
A variation on the complimentary color scheme. Uses 3 colors (1 color and 2 adjacent to its compliment). They will draw attention but without the tension of complementary scheme.

Describe a triadic color scheme?
Uses 3 colors equally spaced around the color wheel. They offer a strong visual balance.

What colors are considered to be warm colors?
Yellows, oranges, and reds.

Describe a warm color scheme?
They are vivid in nature and express aggression, excitement, and danger. They are strong and welcoming and will overpower other colors in a design. They are bold and energetic colors and tend to appear closer.

What colors are considered to be cool colors?
Greens, blues, and violets.

Describe a cool color scheme?
They give an impression of calm and rarely overpower the message of a design. They appear farther away and are used to give illusion of depth.

Why is important to consider which colors are being used within a design?
Because meaning of color impacts all visual communications and it’s important to understand how color is used in our culture. The right color choice can convey the right message and evoke the desired response to any form of visual communication. Color creates an emotional reaction.

Review Week 6

What is the pen tool used for?
It is used to create an outline of an object/texture.

How can you manipulate a path/line in Illustrator? Discuss the use of the white arrow tool, pen+, pen-, and convert too.
You can manipulate a path/line in illustrator by using the white arrow tool. The "tools" under the white arrow tool are the pen+ tool and the pen- tool. The pen+ tool adds anchors to a line and the pen- tools deletes anchors from a line. There's also a convert tool which allows you to bend or manipulate a line.

How can you utilize the layers palette in Illustrator?
You can utilize the layers palette by clicking on a layer and dragging it to where you want it to appear on your design. You can also choose to hide a layer by clicking on the image of an eye and you can choose to lock a layer by clicking on the empty box next to the image of an eye.

How do you create a clipping mask in Adobe Illustrator?
1)Use the shape tool and choose the rectangle. Make a rectangle around your image.
2)Use the black arrow tool and create a border around your whole image as well.
3)Go up to the object tab on your tool bar, click it, then go down to clipping mask. Go to the options under clipping mask and choose make.

Review Week 5

This add represents shape very well. It uses many different shapes to make up a soccer ball. This is a very unique way of making up an object and it really captures you attention. All the different shapes make you look at the picture from a different perspective.

This add represents line. The spastic up and down movement of the lines and how close they are together represent a fast pace movement of some sort. I think this picture shows line amazingly because it really send a message using the shape of the lines.

This poster really demonstrates texture because it shows the details of the coconut extremely well. You can really imagine what it would feel like. I think this is a really good poster because it really pulls you in  to look at the detail of it. This shows you texture in a really good way.

This image shows space. It uses a circle of negative space in the very center of the page to catch your eye. I think this tactic is good when trying to grab the audience's attention. This image really makes people take the whole image in.

This final image shows value. Value is the lightness and darkness contrast in an image and this picture shows that very well. It uses a mix of bright and dark color to create a dramatic effect on the picture.

Review Week 3

What is OSHA? What do the letters stand for?
Occupational Safety and Health Administration, it maintains a safe and healthy working environment.

How can graphic designers effectively communicate? In your own words, explain the communication process.
They can communicate through pictures. They can use pictures instead of words to portray a message. A picture, if it is detailed enough, can tell you the same thing as words can.

Understanding the history, culture and movements of fine and graphic arts will make you a better producer of visual messages. Why?
This is true because it will make you more knowledgeable about things that portray a message better or things the viewers enjoy. It can also tell you more about what certain shapes and lines resemble.

Podcast

Podcast #1 Elements of Design

What does it take to create good graphic design?
New computer and software, conveys information, and pleasing to the eye.

What is the difference between elements and principles?
Elements- components or parts which can be isolated in any visual or design/actual things we add to a design. Principles- tell us how we should organize elements on a page or screen.

Name the six (6) elements of design.
Line, shape and form, space, texture, value, and color.

What can lines aid in, when alone or combined with  other lines or shapes?
Readability, appearance, and message of a design.

Which lines suggest a feeling of rest? Why do you think?
Horizontal lines, because they are flat and smooth.

Vertical lines communicate a feeling of what? Why do you think?
Loftiness, because they’re growing, going upward.

What lines suggest a feeling of movement? Why do you think?
Diagonal lines, because it looks as if it’s moving forward.

Soft, shallow curved lines suggest what? Why do you think?
Comfort, safety, or relaxation. Because it’s like a wave, it dips down and it’s very smooth.

These lines suggest confusion and turbulence? Why do you think?
Curved lines, because they’re not straight

What element defines a specific area of space?
Shape

What is the difference between two dimensional shapes and three dimensional shapes?
2D has width and height, 3D has depth, width, and height.

Describe the difference between geometric shapes and organic shapes?
Geometric- structured, often symmetrical shapes. Organic- Found in nature, can be man made shapes, often irregular and fluid.

What are abstract shapes?
Stylized or simplified versions of natural shapes.

Which basic shape projects an attitude of honesty or equality?
Square

What do triangles suggest?
Action or stability if it is pyramid shaped

Circles convey feelings of what?
Protection or infinity

Describe positive space and negative space?
Positive space- refers to the object and elements used in a design. Area which contains ll of the elements you have added to your design. Negative space- Refers to the shapes around and between those objects and elements. Gives a place for the eye to rest.

What is texture?
Refers to the actual surface of a design with the reader actually being able to feel the texture of the paper and materials in the printed design.

Incorporating texture into a design can help do what?
Create a feeling of richness and depth.

What is value?
The degree of light and dark in a design. It is the contrast between black and white and all the tones in between. Gives objects depth and perception.

What is another name for value?
Tone

What can the element of color do when incorporated into a design?
Convey moods, create images, attract attention, and identify objects.

Intro Goals

I took this class because I am a very creative person and I heard stories about this class and it seemed to fit my interests. A goal I have for this class is to be able to take a photograph and completely transform it into something greater with photo shop.
