Podcast #2 Color Theory

The right use of color can do what?
Maximize productivity, minimize visual fatigue, and relax the body.

Within the electromagnetic spectrum, which waves allow us to see color?
Visible light

Describe white light?
Equal parts of all colors in visible spectrum.

How do we see color if objects "have no color of their own"?
Objects appear to be in color when they absorb or reflect colors in the visible spectrum. Reflected color is the color we see.

What is a glass prism?
A transparent triangular object that breaks white light into all he colors.

What seven colors result when white light is refracted through a prism?
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

Describe hue?
The color itself.

When does white light occur?
When all the wavelengths are reflected back to your eye.

When does black light occur?
When no light is reflected back to your eye.

How color is perceived depends on what?
The type of light it is seen with.

What is a color wheel?
A visual tool that shows the relationship between primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.

What are primary colors? Name them?
The main colors on a color wheel. Red, yellow, and blue.

What are secondary colors? Name them?
When two primary colors are mixed together. Orange, green, and violet.

What are tertiary colors? Name them?
When primary colors and secondary colors are mixed together. Red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, and red-violet.

What are neutral colors? How can they be created?
Don’t show up on the color wheel and they’re colors of very low saturation. Created by mixing complementary colors.

How can a neutral color help a design?
They help to put the focus on other colors or serve to tone down overpowering colors.

What are complementary colors? Name them?
Colors that draw a lot of attention and work best in situations where you need high-contrast compositions. 2 colors opposite of each other on the color scheme. Red and green, orange and blue, yellow and violet.

What is color value?
The lightness or darkness of a hue.

What is a shade?
When you add black to a hue it creates a low-value color.

What is a tint?
When you add white to a hue it produces a high-value color.

What is saturation/intensity?
Brightness of a color.

What happens when you mix complementary colors together?
You produce a dull tone.

Describe color harmony?
A pleasing arrangement of parts. It’s pleasing to the eye and creates a sense of order.

What is a color scheme?
Used to create style and appeal. Based on the color wheel and the arrangement of colors. They remain harmonious regardless of the rotation angle.

Describe a monochromatic color scheme?
Uses variations of tints and shades. They go well together making a smoothing effect and is very easy on the eyes.

Describe an analogous color scheme?
Uses 3 colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel (one is used as a dominant color while others enrich the scheme). They are found in nature and are pleasing to the eye. They produce a bright and cheery effect and can accommodate changing in moods.

Describe a complementary color scheme?
Made of 2 colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel. They draw a lot of attention and work best in situations where you need high-contrast compositions.

Describe a split-complementary color scheme?
A variation on the complimentary color scheme. Uses 3 colors (1 color and 2 adjacent to its compliment). They will draw attention but without the tension of complementary scheme.

Describe a triadic color scheme?
Uses 3 colors equally spaced around the color wheel. They offer a strong visual balance.

What colors are considered to be warm colors?
Yellows, oranges, and reds.

Describe a warm color scheme?
They are vivid in nature and express aggression, excitement, and danger. They are strong and welcoming and will overpower other colors in a design. They are bold and energetic colors and tend to appear closer.

What colors are considered to be cool colors?
Greens, blues, and violets.

Describe a cool color scheme?
They give an impression of calm and rarely overpower the message of a design. They appear farther away and are used to give illusion of depth.

Why is important to consider which colors are being used within a design?
Because meaning of color impacts all visual communications and it’s important to understand how color is used in our culture. The right color choice can convey the right message and evoke the desired response to any form of visual communication. Color creates an emotional reaction.
